Tatonka Lodge is the grandest luxury cabin available at Buffalo Creek resort. Not only does it tick off everything you could want in a mountain cabin, but it is also perfect for a family reunion! Its large size and stunning views will ensure everyone will enjoy their stay. The main entrance has a porte-cochere so guests can pull up and unload luggage, rain, or shine.
The open floor plan and high ceilings inside give a spacious feel while the rustic wooden walls and stone hearth still allow the lodge to be warm and inviting. Floor-to-ceiling windows on either side of 2 wood-burning fireplaces add to the ambiance and bring the outside in with lots of natural light and mountain scenery. A large kitchen provides all the space you’ll need to create a home-cooked meal worthy of gathering around the big family-style dining table.
Sleeping arrangement: Being the largest vacation rental Buffalo Creek has to offer, this cabin easily sleeps 14 people. There are 2 master suites on the main level with private bathrooms, each with its jacuzzi tub and deck access. A third bedroom on the lower level hosts a queen-size bed. A kid’s bedroom on the lower level sleeps 4 with a twin over a full bunk bed and a unique covered wagon twin-sized bed. A loft overlooking the great room has 2 futon beds for extra places for guests to sleep. Bonus: this cabin is pet friendly— Your pet is family too so don’t leave them behind!
Fill each day with relaxing and playing games while staying at this lodge. The game room in the basement offers air hockey, pool, and foosball. Or challenge someone to a strategic game of life-sized chess! Spend some time relaxing in the hot tub on the property while your grill master in the family fires up the large charcoal grill or roast some marshmallows over the firepit.
More things to do are available at the main ranch! The early bird in your group will enjoy the unique experience of feeding the bison that roam the property. Kids love petting, feeding, and brushing the barn animals that call this place home just as much as the animals enjoy all the attention. Younger kids can even take a ride on one of the mini horses!
There are also fun attractions in the nearby towns of Waynesville, Clyde, and Maggie Valley. Asheville-Biltmore gem mining is a must and guarantees you’ll find treasures to go home with. You won’t want to drive past the area’s motorcycle museum, Wheels Through Time, either.
While out, stop by the Great Smoky Mountains National Park to white water raft for an exhilarating adventure! This trip is one you won’t want to forget, so be sure to stop in the Buffalo Creek resort’s gift shop before packing up!

You are not going to regret this one! Cabin is beautiful and EXTREMELY well stocked! We had 4 kids ( 12, 9, 4 and infant) and 4 adults and had plenty of towels, cups, silverware, plates, bowls etc. We went down and fed the bison as well as the bunnies, goats and horses which the kids loved. Went fishing at the pond Cheryl suggests in email and in a helpful book on the counter in the cabin and the kids ALL caught fish as well as us adults so we did a fish fry. All of us loved the game room down stairs and getting cozy with a movie in the evenings with a fire going. There is a great little playground and tire swing and an easy stroll down a path from the cabin. Hot tub and fire pit area is awesome. There were plenty of bath towels plus special towels for the hot tub, a pack and play and swing for baby, plenty of couch pillows and blankets, furniture to eat dinner on the porch was plentiful and the views were STUNNING. It was quiet in the evenings, we watched wild bunnies off the back deck. I suggest guests bring an outdoor blanket and fishing poles but if you don’t Wal-Mart is about 25 minutes away. Cheryl and her family were extremely responsive, we had zero issues and LOVED our stay. So many great memories were made! Thank you Bison Ranch family, Lindsey T., Laro, FL March 2018
We wanted to experience something with our seven-year old that would be exciting and unique for all three of us, and this fit the bill perfectly! Cheryl was always right on it with answers to our questions, the caboose was as cool as I’d hoped, the details are perfect, it’s a super cozy luxe suite with a loft our son adored, we all loved seeing the grazing buffalo right outside and the animals including llamas just a short walk away! I would highly Recommend the caboose for a unique adventure and fun for all! Theresa S., August 2016
My husband and I and our two children, (11 and 13-year-olds) stayed here with our two dogs for our winter break from school. We all fell in love with the cabin the minute we saw it. We did a lot of skiing in Maggie Valley and it was only a 15-20 minute drive there each day. We got very lucky and there was a lot of real snow the week we were there. It was beautiful. We all enjoyed coming back to the cabin and my son and husband would build a big fire to relax after a long day of skiing. My daughter and I enjoyed relaxing in the hot tub as well. My kid’s favorite thing was definitely the animals. They would make sure we got change every day before leaving Maggie Valley so they could get food for the animals out of the little machines and feed them each day. Cheryl and her family were all very helpful with any and all questions we had. We lost water for just a short time one afternoon but someone was out within a few minutes of reporting the issue. It was due to the extremely cold temps but was fixed immediately. We were very impressed with the friendliness and helpfulness of everyone. We definitely plan to return, my daughter asked if we could move there.

Buffalo Creek Vacations is a family owned & operated business. Our dad, along w/ our mom, Harriet Clackett, made the move to the beautiful Smoky Mountains in 1994. We all just fell in love with the area & all that it has to offer from hiking & waterfalls in the summer to the beautiful foliage in the fall, skiing in the winter & new baby bison being born in the springtime.
We also purchased several cabooses that were relocated to the property & we renovated them and started renting them out! We hope you love the mountains like we have all come to!
